Some of these problems that we can fix for you in our Ashland office include the following.
A crossbite is a type of malocclusion where there’s a lateral misalignment of the dental arches; the upper teeth essentially sit inside the lower teeth. If there’s a crossbite in the back teeth, this may be because of a narrow palate. A common treatment to this problem is by using an expander.
An underbite is a type of crossbite where the lower front teeth sit in front of the upper front teeth. This may happen because the lower jaw overgrows the upper jaw or because the patient bites forward as a habit.
Spacing problems occur when there are teeth that are missing, teeth that are smaller than normal, or teeth that just don’t grow in. This can cause teeth to spread out unnaturally and create gaps. This won’t just pose an aesthetic problem for the patient, but it may cause bite problems as well.
An overjet is a protrusion of teeth. The lower teeth are too far behind the upper teeth, whether it’s because the upper teeth extend too far or the lower teeth don’t extend far enough. This condition can be caused and exacerbated by thumb sucking and tongue thrusting.
Crowding occurs when there’s not enough space in the mouth to allow all the teeth to erupt. This may happen because the teeth are too large, the jaw is too small, or maybe even a combination of both. This can also happen when baby teeth are lost too early and adjacent teeth shift into the now empty space.
This bite occurs when the upper front teeth extend out over the lower front teeth. This can be problematic because sometimes the lower front teeth can bite into the roof of the mouth.
An openbite is a bite in which the upper and lower front teeth don’t overlap. This type of bite will impact speech and proper chewing ability. A possible cause for an openbite may be related to tongue thrusting or thumb sucking. In certain cases, this can be associated with vertical jaw discrepancies.
Unmatched Dental Midlines
This is when upper and lower midlines don’t match with the facial midline. Asymmetric midlines can be caused by missing teeth, crowding, or jaw discrepancies.
